Commercial Vehicle Technician, Level 1

Job Summary: The Level 1 Commercial Vehicle Technician at Blue Collar Customs is an entry-level role primarily focused on the installation of bolt-on equipment for light and medium-duty commercial trucks. This position involves working with basic mechanical and electrical systems, installing items such as lights, racks, and other equipment according to customer specifications. The Level 1 Technician will gain hands-on experience in vehicle upfitting, learning essential skills and safety protocols while contributing to the team’s success. No prior experience is required, but a willingness to learn and attention to detail are essential.
Responsibilities & Duties:
• Bolt-on Equipment Installation: Install bolt-on equipment on light and medium-duty commercial trucks, including lights, racks, and steps. Follow the provided instructions and ensure precision in each installation.
• Basic Electrical Work: Install electrical components such as strobe lights, ensuring proper wiring, connections, and functionality.
• Vehicle Preparation: Prepare vehicles for equipment installation by cleaning and organizing work areas. Ensure surfaces are ready for proper installation and work with the team to inspect vehicles for pre-installation requirements.
• Material Management: Assist in maintaining an inventory of tools, equipment, and materials required for installations. Help organize and track materials to ensure smooth workflow during upfitting projects.
• Quality Control: Inspect installations to ensure they meet Blue Collar Customs’ standards. Address any issues under supervision, such as improper installation or alignment, and make corrections as needed.
• Safety and Compliance: Follow all safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper tool handling. Ensure that work adheres to safety standards and regulations.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with senior technicians and other team members to ensure installations are completed on time. Assist team members as needed, contributing to an efficient and supportive work environment.
• Learning and Development: Actively participate in training and development opportunities provided by Blue Collar Customs to build technical skills and advance within the team.
• Documentation: Keep accurate records of completed installations, including time spent on tasks and any issues encountered. Assist in maintaining documentation for workflow processes.
Essential Functions:
• Bolt-on Installation: Perform accurate and efficient installation of bolt-on equipment, including lights, racks, and steps, ensuring a secure and professional fit.
• Basic Electrical Work: Perform basic electrical tasks such as wiring lights and other electrical components, following diagrams and instructions to ensure proper functionality.
• Tool Operation: Utilize hand and power tools with precision, ensuring correct installation of equipment while adhering to safety protocols.
• Problem Solving: Identify and resolve any issues that arise during installation, such as alignment or fitment challenges, under supervision.
• Time Management: Complete assigned tasks efficiently, meeting project deadlines while maintaining quality standards.
• Attention to Detail: Carefully inspect all installations, ensuring that all work meets company quality standards and customer expectations.
• Safety Adherence: Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of tools and materials.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with senior technicians and team members, contributing to a supportive and efficient workflow.

Qualification and Skills:
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical school training or relevant certifications are a plus.
• Driver's License: Valid driver’s license required, with a clean driving record.
• Mechanical Aptitude: Basic understanding of mechanical systems and tools, with the ability to learn and apply new skills in vehicle upfitting.
• Electrical Knowledge: Familiarity with basic electrical systems is a plus but not required; training will be provided.
• Color Vision: Ability to distinguish between colors to ensure proper installation of wiring and components.
• Communication Skills: Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, as well as communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
• Problem Solving: Willingness to tackle challenges that arise during installation work, seeking guidance when necessary.

Types of Jobs Encountered:
• Bolt-On Accessories Installation: Responsible for installing basic bolt-on accessories, including tonneau covers, toolboxes, and steps, ensuring proper alignment and secure attachment.
• Vehicle-Specific Wiring: Upfit vehicles using pre-fabricated vehicle-specific wiring harnesses for components such as strobe lights and basic electrical add-ons.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No direct reports or any level of supervision.
Work Environment:
• Physical Setting: The Level 1 Technician will primarily work in a well-equipped automotive shop environment. The role involves frequent movement around light and medium-duty commercial trucks, requiring the use of various hand and power tools.
• Physical Demands: This position requires substantial physical activity, including standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, reaching, and occasionally working in tight or awkward positions. Technicians must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and handle heavy or bulky equipment.
• Environmental Factors: The shop environment may expose technicians to dust, fumes, and other airborne particles. Technicians will work around vehicles, tools, and equipment that may pose hazards if not handled properly. Proper ventilation and safety equipment will be provided to minimize exposure.
• Noise Level: The workspace typically has a moderate to high noise level due to machinery, tools, and vehicle operations.
• Safety Protocols: Strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection, as well as following all safety procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Team Interaction: While much of the work is performed independently, collaboration with senior technicians and team members is essential for completing installations efficiently and maintaining high-quality standards.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work:
• Employment Type: This is a full-time position.
• Work Schedule: The normal work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
• Overtime: Overtime opportunities are available as the work schedule demands and will be compensated accordingly.
Travel:
• General Travel Requirements: Travel for this position is generally limited. Most work is conducted on-site at our facility.
• Onsite Installations: Minimal travel may be required for onsite installations, typically only necessary for rework or specific client requests.
• Events and Training: Occasional overnight travel may be required to attend industry events, training sessions, or other professional development opportunities to enhance skills and stay updated with industry trends.
